The First Steps For Visual Communication

Our  first topic  in the History of Visual Communication course was "Rocks and Caves". Why rocks and caves? Because the paintings or symbols on them were the initiators of visual communication.
First of all, CAVE PAINTINGS are the paintings on cave  or rock walls or ceilings. It is supposed that the drawings were made by respected elders or shamans. Most common themes were large wild animals, tracing of human hands, and abstract patterns. On the contrary drawings of humans were rare.

  • A cave painting found in Chauvet Cave located in France. It's depicting lions that are hunting bisons.

  • Another painting that was found in Chauvet Cave. The animals in the painting are horses, bisons, and rhinos.

  • This hand tracings are from the Cave of Hands located in Patagonia, Argentina.

Another means of expressing thoughts that time were PETROGLYPHS. They are images carved in rocks. Their importance is that they were the form of pre-writing symbols used in communication. In later years other writing systems began to appear such as PICTOGRAPHS and IDEOGRAMS. By the way, there is an obvious difference between petroglyphs and pictographs: Petroglyphs are carved into rocks, while pictographs are painted on to rocks.

  • Example of a pertoglyph located in Moab, Utah .

  •  Example of a pictograph located in Southern Utah.

GEOGLYPHS are the drawings on the ground that are usually much more bigger than four meters. They were made by either arranging stones or by removing some of the surface of the ground. Most sommon themes were stylized animal figures and abstract shapes.
